That was the central message from <strong>Leta Palmiter<\/strong> and <strong>Kelly Lucero<\/strong> during their <a href=\"https:\/\/learningally.org\/conferences\/spotlight-on-dyslexia\">Spotlight on Dyslexia<\/a> 2024 session, <em>Empowering Reading Instruction with AI: Harnessing Technology for Individualized and Enhanced Learning<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drawing on years of experience as dyslexia specialists and professional learning facilitators, Leta and Kelly helped educators understand what AI is, why it matters, and how it can make daily reading instruction more efficient and more responsive to student needs\u2014including those with dyslexia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"578\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.learningally.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-19-1024x578.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14708\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-media.learningally.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-19-1024x578.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wp-media.learningally.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-19-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wp-media.learningally.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-19-768x433.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wp-media.learningally.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-19.jpg 1035w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/share.descript.com\/view\/xJlYRMSmxvP\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-ai-in-education-understanding-the-basics-behind-today-s-tools\"><strong>What Is AI in Education? Understanding the Basics Behind Today\u2019s Tools<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of today\u2019s AI-for-education tools are powered by large language models (LLMs). These systems are trained on massive collections of text and can assist educators with tasks such as drafting lessons, supporting student reading and writing, and simplifying everyday planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Educators already use versions of AI every day; spellcheck, speech-to-text, and predictive text are all early examples. Today\u2019s tools simply build on these foundations and make them more accessible in the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-should-teachers-be-afraid-of-ai-nbsp\"><strong>Should Teachers Be Afraid of AI?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Feeling unsure about AI is normal\u2014new technology often feels fast, unfamiliar, and overwhelming. In a 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/technology\/most-teachers-are-not-using-ai-heres-why\/2024\/01?\"><em>EdWeek<\/em> survey<\/a>, <strong>two-thirds of K-12 educators reported they had not used AI-driven tools in their classrooms, <\/strong>37% said they\u2019d never used them and have no plans to start, while 29% planned to adopt them soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the landscape shifted quickly. A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/technology\/heres-how-teachers-are-using-ai-to-save-time\/2025\/02\"> 2025 <em>EdWeek<\/em><\/a> article found that <strong>9 in 10 educators say AI has already changed the job of teaching at least \u201ca little\u201d<\/strong>, and 42% said it has changed the profession \u201ca fair amount\u201d or \u201ca lot\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leta and Kelly emphasized an essential point:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cEducators are not replaceable. AI is here to support teachers, not replace them.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI can enhance\u2014not replace\u2014educator expertise by helping teachers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Save time on planning, differentiating, and documentation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create materials tailored to student needs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improve accessible learning for students with dyslexia and other reading differences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Focus instructional time on human connection and expert decision-making<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With thoughtful use, AI becomes another tool in the teacher\u2019s toolbox\u2014not a threat to the profession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-ai-saves-teachers-time-tools-that-streamline-planning-and-differentiation\"><strong>How AI Saves Teachers Time: Tools That Streamline Planning and Differentiation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During the session, Leta and Kelly highlighted several AI tools that streamline planning, differentiation, and documentation. Helpful AI-powered literacy tools include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Reading access:<\/strong> screen readers, text-to-speech, smart pens<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Writing support:<\/strong> grammar tools, spelling assistance, word prediction, and writing scaffolds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Organization:<\/strong> reminders, digital planners, and task management apps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Practice tools:<\/strong> Exercise, Whole Phonics, and emerging AI-powered decodable readers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Leta noted that emerging tools can analyze a child\u2019s oral reading for patterns (e.g., blend errors, missing syllables), providing teachers with time-saving insights into reading behaviors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-start-using-ai-in-literacy-instruction\"><strong>How To Start Using AI in Literacy Instruction<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Leta and Kelly recommended two simple steps to begin using AI for reading instruction:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-start-with-one-ai-tool\"><strong>1.
