That\u2019s why Learning Ally has put together some practical tips to help you support your child\u2019s reading journey best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before we dive in, let\u2019s get clear on <em>why <\/em>literacy is so important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-6fb9306d134194c1876e69ff326eae52\" style=\"color:#005fb3\">Understanding the Importance of Literacy<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Literacy is the foundation of a child&#8217;s education. That\u2019s why as a part of our solutions, Learning Ally works closely with community partners, government officials, schools, and educators to ensure parents are equipped with the right knowledge and resources to be a piece of their child\u2019s education puzzle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supporting literacy at home doesn&#8217;t have to be a daunting task. With practical tips, parents and caregivers can make learning outside the classroom fun at any age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-edc04770630ef212e3440c4c54984c7b\" style=\"color:#005fb3\">Daily Activities to Promote Literacy<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Read Aloud Daily: <\/strong>Make reading a daily habit. Choose a variety of books that interest your child and read aloud together. This not only improves their listening skills but also introduces them to new vocabulary and concepts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Create a Reading-Friendly Environment: <\/strong>Have a dedicated reading space at home filled with books, magazines, and other reading materials. Make it cozy and inviting to encourage your child to spend time there.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Engage in Conversations: <\/strong>Talk with your child about their day, their interests, and the books they&#8217;re reading. Some families even shared they enjoy using podcasts, reading the transcripts as they listen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Library Visits: <\/strong>Regular trips to the library allow families to explore new books and participate in community reading programs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Educational Games: <\/strong>Board games, puzzles, and educational apps that focus on vocabulary and comprehension are popular.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Storytelling: <\/strong>Creating and telling stories are common practices that help children develop their narrative skills.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Writing Activities: <\/strong>Families often engage in writing letters, keeping journals, and creating stories together.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We also asked our volunteers and staff to get involved and share real-life examples of how they\u2019ve connected family time with literacy-building activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheree, a longtime volunteer with Learning Ally, shared:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur literacy activity began by chance. My daughter and I lived 1,100 miles apart from my sister and her son. Both my daughter and her son had trouble focusing on printed material, but both loved to create and tell stories. My daughter wrote a clever, short piece called <em>The Story of Kimberlee<\/em> and I happened to send it to my sister because it got a very positive response from my daughter\u2019s teacher. My sister read the story to my nephew. Within a few weeks, we received a new episode, which my daughter could not wait to read. The back and forth went on for over a year, with the story getting more complex as they tried to up each other\u2019s game. The strategy was not planned, I did not study results for either child, but both had fun reading and writing while they built a relationship with each other. From my perspective, engaging in this process left us all excited to read and write.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paula, Director of Volunteer and Corporate Partnerships here at Learning Ally, shared that her daughter was practicing words in Spanish when she was just one and a half years old, which she learned by reciting words back to her father after he spoke them to her. <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/I8tKjk2tH9k\">See her in action here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Opportunities to read and learn together are all around us.
